Great anonymous blog question emailed to me:
9. "My period is three to four days late, but I have been spotting lightly for the last 8 to 9 days. I took a home pregnancy test that I had had for about two years. I took the test on the day that I missed my period, and it was negative. If I am not pregnant, what could be causing the spotting for so long before my period? I have never had this happen before..."

First of all: was the test expired? Usually they have an expiration date written on there. If so, I would retest first thing in the morning (when the hormones are at their highest concentration) with a new test.
Those tests are very sturdy and have a very long shelf life, so chances are that it is accurate, however, they are not perfect!
Spotting before your period is very common for many women. However, if it is not common for you, it is worth looking into. Sometimes women spot or have a change in their cycle due to stress, change in the weather, diet changes, etc. You can spot if you are pregnant around the time of your period, and that would indicate the implantation of the embryo in the uterus.
It has been so long since I was pregnant that I don't remember whether I spotted or not. I would love to hear from other women on this issue and if they have had it before.
Good luck to you either way,
Dr. Catherine Prann
